The series will also explore race and sexuality as it follows a new group of women carving their paths in the baseball league and outside of it, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
"Twenty-eight years ago, Penny Marshall told us a story about women playing professional baseball that up until then had been largely overlooked. We grew up obsessed with the film, like everyone else. Three years ago, we approached Sony with the idea of telling a new, still overlooked set of those stories. With the help of an enormously talented team of collaborators, an amazing cast and the devoted support of Amazon to this project, we feel beyond lucky and excited to get to bring these characters to life," said Graham and Jacobson in a joint statement.
"It took grit, fire, authenticity, wild imagination and a crackling sense of humor for these players to achieve their dreams. We’re hoping to bring audiences a story with all of those qualities."
The reboot’s cast members include Jacobson, Chanté Adams, D’Arcy Carden, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Kelly McCormack, Roberta Colindrez and Priscilla Delgado with recurring guest stars such as Molly Ephraim, Kate Berlan and Melanie Field. The pilot will be directed by Jamie Babbit.
The series was first developed in March 2018 by Sony, and Jacobson with Graham are said to have reached out to Marshall who directed the original movie before her passing and Geena Davis who played in the original movie.
This is the second time a reboot of the film has been made, with the first being in 1993 with CBS but was pulled after three episodes.
Released in 1992, A League of Their Own tells a fictionalized account of the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. It features the cast of Davis, Tom Hanks, Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell. (car/wng)
