ctor Iko Uwais will star in the latest installment of The Expendables, along with a line of actors who have long been part of the American action thriller franchise, such as Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham.
As reported by online entertainment news site Deadline on Tuesday, Iko will play the role of the villain. However, the name and full description of the character is yet to be known.
"So excited and thankful to be given the opportunity to work with the legends of the industry. #theexpendables4" Iko wrote on Instagram as he shared the news on Wednesday.
Iko is the latest actor reported to be joining The Expendables 4. Previously, Megan Fox, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Tony Jaa, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran and Andy Garcia have been said to be joining the cast.
Actors from the original Expendables will also reunite and reprise their roles. Stallone will return as Barney Ross, Statham as Lee Christmas, Dolph Lundgren as Gunner Jensen and Randy Couture as Toll Road. The Hollywood action legends will assemble a new group of mercenaries in the film.
The Expendables 4 was written by Spencer Cohen and will be directed by 2012’s Act of Valor and 2014’s Need for Speed director Scott Waugh. Production of the film is said to have begun on Sept. 29.
The film marks the return of the franchise seven years after The Expendables 3 in 2014. The Expendables came out in 2010, followed by The Expendables 2 in 2012.
The film is expected to be released next year.
Iko's name became known in the Indonesian film industry after his role in 2009’s Merantau by Gareth Evans. He returned to work with Evans in The Raid in 2012 and its 2014 sequel which made his name skyrocket internationally.
Following his rise to stardom, Iko started starring in films outside Indonesia, such as Man of Tai Chi, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Beyond Skyline and Mile 22.
Iko recently starred in Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins this year. He also starred in, and executive-produced, the Wu Assassins series currently streaming on Netflix.
