ENPASAR: The Denpasar city administration gave Rp 600 million (US$54,000) on Wednesday to 100 sekeha gong (traditional music troupes) operating in the provincial capital, in its bid to revitalize the Balinese traditional music industry.
Denpasar Mayor Ida Bagus Rai Darmawijaya Mantra said the funds should help the Balinese maintain the balance between traditional culture and the modern world.
"That's why the government and the public must continue to watch over our cultural heritage, and make sure that this legacy will continue to exist," he said.
Head of the administration's Cultural Agency Luh Gde Hariasih said the sekeha gong, which exist in nearly every banjar (traditional neighborhood organization) in Bali, would receive Rp 6 million each.
She expressed hope the funds could motivate other parties to continue the tradition.
Sekeha gong often incorporate theatrical performances into their music shows, which many Balinese regard as teachings of life. --JP
