SURABAYA: Three women have been awarded for their dedication to science and technology in a ceremony commemorating Kartini Day which is observed on April 21.
Held at the Surabaya Plaza Hotel and organized by Airlangga University's Women Studies Center in cooperation with the hotel, the 15th Kartini Award was given to Myrtati Dyah Artaria, a physical anthropology expert.
The first runner-up was Uun Yanuhar, a biotechnology and virology expert. The second runner-up was Yuyun Nurlaela, an elementary school teacher who created teaching tools to help her students understand science easier.
Forty women participated in the annual event, from Surabaya, Sidoarjo, Gresik, Malang, Situbondo, Banyuwangi, Madiun, Bekasi, Bogor and Jakarta.
The committee chose 10 of them as nominators after a tight selection based on certain criteria; being between 18 and 60 years' old, having a profession in the technology and science sector, being passionate in their fields and benefitting their communities. - JP
