ndonesian shuttler Simon Santoso ended German Marc Zweibler's fairy-tale run at the 2009 Danish Open Super Series badminton championship with a 21-14, 21-6 win to grab the men's singles title at Odense Idraets Park, Odense, Denmark, on Sunday night.
Indonesian coach Davies Effren said he always knew the fifth-seeded Simon would win because Zweibler had pushed himself too hard during his three-set victory over Sony Dwi Kuncoro in Saturday's semifinal.
"I was certain that he wouldn't be in perfect condition because he needed three sets to defeat Sony in the semifinal, and I just knew he'd have trouble facing Simon," Effren told Antara on Monday.
"He'd run out of energy."
Simon, 24, the gold medalist at the 2003 and 2007 Southeast Asia (SEA) Games, only took 38 minutes to wrap up his win over Zweibler.
The match started out very close, but Simon found his rhythm first. He took a five-point lead at 9-4. Zweibler fell further behind, giving Simon an eight-point lead at 16-8. Simon then closed out the set 21-14.
In the second set, Simon immediately went in front. Zwiebler tried to keep up but it was not enough, as Simon extended his lead to 8-2. Simon then opened up an 11-point lead at 15-4, before closing out the set and the championship at 21-6.
Zweibler's place in the final came courtesy of a remarkable run that saw him beat Malaysians Wong Choong Hann and Muh. Hafiz Hashim, China's Chen Long and second seed Sony Dwi Kuncoro.
In the women's draw, home favorite Tine Rasmussen avenged her 2009 All England defeat to China's Wang Yihan with a hard-fought 21-18, 19-21, 21-14 win.
The hosts also bagged the mixed doubles title, with Joachim Fisher and Christinna Pedersen beating England's Anthony Clark and Donna Kellogg 21-16, 25-27, 21-17.
China, which previously threatened to boycott the tournament, saw Pan Pan and Zhang Yawen from its small squad beat Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Lena Frier Kristiansen of Denmark 22-20, 18-21, 21-12 for the women's doubles title.
The men's doubles title went to Malaysia's Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong, who defeated Danish pair Mathias Boe and Carsten Morgensen 20-22, 21-14, 21-17.
The next tour stop is the French Super Series in Paris, which begins Oct. 28.
