alibaru subdistrict in South Jakarta, home to poor fishermen despite its strategic location close to Tanjung Priok international seaport, has captured the attention of HOPE Worldwide Indonesia, which is building a community center there.

The foundation began construction of its Saturday Academy, where local children have been getting extra lessons each Saturday since 2007, volunteer Enrico Daniel H. Sitompul said.

"Initially, we set up a hut along the beach, but it was destroyed by strong waves," Enrico said.

He said the foundation then ran lessons in the houses of nine area residents before it eventually rented out its own house.

Neighborhood unit head Slamet said the rented house had become a post for area residents to study and recycle plastic waste and unused paper. There are 170 families in the neighborhood unit.

"There are 200 people enrolled in the program, with older people teaching the newcomers," he said.

Area resident Chuswati said that for the past three years she enjoyed participating at the center.

"I sew discarded plastic into bags and wallets. Apart from making use of trash, I can earn money for my family," Chuswati said.

Enrico said his office ran several similar programs in other areas including Pedongkelan, East Jakarta, and Mangga Dua, North Jakarta. "We run different programs at each site depending on the needs."

He said his organization aimed to help one million children across the nation between 2007 and 2012.

To achieve this, Enrico explained, HOPE had conducted charity events, including the fourth HOPE Photography Festival for Charity last month.

During this year's final round of the photography contest, pictures by the nine finalists will include community center themes, such as pictures of local healthcenters, public toilets and playgrounds.

HOPE community-based disaster risk reduction official Donald Warouw said the organization would showcase the pictures at an exhibition at Senayan City Mall from May 1 to 8.

"We will announce the winner of the competition on May 8. We will use the money generated by the exhibition to cover operational costs," Donald said.

In last year's event, he added, HOPE raised Rp 50 million (US$5,430).

"We are targeting to achieve at least the amount or perhaps even exceed it," he said.

"I believe a picture carries a strong message," Ian Juanda, a participant from South Kalimantan, said.
