AKASSAR: A 737-200 Boeing operated by Express Air from Makassar to Sorong had to return to Sultan Hasanuddin Airport due to an engine breakdown after flying for 30 minutes on Tuesday.
The plane with flight number XN-818 carried 121 people including four children and five crew members. No one was injured.
Airport authority reported that the plane with captain Apistrong and copilot Baskoro in the cockpit took off at 10 a.m. local time (9 a.m. Jakarta time) and was forced back on ground half an hour later.
“Upon receiving information from the pilot that they were about to make emergency landing, we took anticipatory measures by calling in a fire vehicle,” airport operator PT Angkasa Pura 1 public relations officer Klintoron said.
The passengers were evacuated to the waiting lounge before re-embarking on another Express Air plane that arrived from Ternate, Maluku.
The ill-fated plane is currently parked in an apron for further examination from both airport administrators and Express Air technicians. — JP
