RI to host World Economic Forum in June

I

ndonesia will host the World Economic Forum on East Asia on June 12 and 13 in Jakarta — the first time the nation has hosted such an event.

The forum is expected to be attended by more than 500 people who shape the lives of billions of people around the world, ranging from businesspeople to international NGO activists.

Those who have already confirmed attendance include World Customs Organization secretary-general Kunio Mikuriya from Brussels, Unilever chief executive officer Paul Polma from London and PricewaterhouseCoopers chairman Dennis Nally from the US.

The event — titled “Responding to the New Globalism” — will be held to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the World Economic Forum on East Asia and is slated to cover managing global disruptions, ensuring employment and exclusive growth, leading through sustainability and exploring new norms in Asia.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) is a Swiss non-profit foundation known for running a more famous forum with a global scope in Davos, Switzerland.

The foundation, according to its website, is an independent international organization committed to improving the world by engaging business, political, academic and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas.

“The upcoming event in Jakarta was initiated by the Indonesian government,” WEF spokesman Fon Mathuros Chantanayingyong said during a visit to The Jakarta Post’s office on Tuesday.

Hosting the event with WEF is an Indonesian government initiative to bring more investors to the nation to fund infrastructure needed to spur economic growth, which is projected to increase 6.5 percent this year.

The effort is timely. Many investors in advanced economies are shifting investments to the rapidly growing economies in Asia.

The event will further highlight Indonesia’s role as the only Southeast Asian member of the G20 and the current holder of ASEAN’s rotating chair, where the nation is spearheading efforts to integrate the 600 million people and combined US$1.8 trillion GDPs of the association’s members.
