AKARTA: State oil and gas company PT Pertamina agreed on Monday to resume supplying fuel to ailing state airline PT Merpati Nusantara Airline at Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, East Java, and Hasanuddin airport in Makassar, South Sulawesi.
Pertamina vice president for communication Mochamad Harun said Merpati agreed to repay in stages its first tranche of fuel debt amounting to Rp 212 billion (US$24 million) — excluding interest and penalties — within a maximum of seven years. Merpati’s second tranche of debt amounting to Rp 44 billion and $700,000 will be repaid within a maximum of two years. Merpati’s recent fuel debt worth Rp 8.2 billion and $121,000 will be paid by Oct. 21. Pertamina cut fuel supply to Merpati on Saturday at Juanda and Hasanuddin airports, shutting around 80 percent of the airline’s operations.
“For the upcoming fuel purchases, Pertamina will demand that Merpati pay in cash on the spot,” said Harun.
