Iran says its scientists have produced the nation’s first nuclear fuel rod, a feat of engineering the West doubted Tehran was capable of.

Sunday’s announcement comes after Iran has said it was compelled to manufacture fuel rods on its own after international sanctions banned Tehran from buying them in foreign markets.

The US and Israel will be happy to hear the news so that they can continue with their warmongering.

In principle, however, nothing in international law or in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty forbids the enrichment of uranium.

Besides Iran, several other countries, parties or not to the treaty, enrich uranium without being accused of “threatening the peace”.

In Iran, these activities are submitted to inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency. These inspections, it is true, are constrained by a safeguard agreement dating back to the 1970s.

It is also true, however, that the IAEA has never uncovered any attempted diversion of nuclear material for military use in Iran.

A military attack will give the Iranians the best excuse to pursue the nuclear race.

Khamenei will say “I was attacked by a country with nuclear capabilities; my nuclear program was peaceful, but I must protect my country now using nukes like them.”
