AKARTA: The collision of freight trains in South Sumatra on Sunday left four people dead and prompted the stoppage of coal supply to Java.
The four victims were the machinists and assistants on both trains, according to detik.com. The names of trains were not identified, with the stating that two Babaranjang trains had collided at Air Rimau, Rambang Dangku district, Muaraenim regency.
The news portal quoted a witness as saying that the incident took place at 5:30 a.m.
“The rail traffic from Palembang to Lubuklinggau as well as to Tanjungkarang is not operating at the moment,” the witness was quoted as saying.
“We hope the delay will last only 12 hours,” Jaka Jakarsih, the local spokesperson of state railway company PT KAI, said as quoted by Antara.
Jaka said coal supplies to Java and other destinations were served by 12 trains daily, each comprising 40 coaches with a load of 200 tons in total.
“The stoppage is only affecting half the supply,” he said.
