OGYAKARTA: Some 40 school teachers in Yogyakarta joined a workshop on English teaching on Monday in a bid to improve their teaching skills.
“English is very important for global communications. As a city of education and tourism, Yogyakarta needs those with English skills,” Mayor Haryadi Suyuti said after opening the workshop.
The workshop was jointly organized by the Education and Culture Ministry, Chevron and The Jakarta Post foundation. Launched on Dec. 19, 2011, the program has been held in 100 schools in 15 cities in nine provinces.
For the foundation, the workshop is part of its newspaper in education (NIE) program.
The foundation was represented by executive director Riyadi Suparno and marketing general manager Yulia Herawati.
PT Chevron Pacific Indonesia president director A. Hamid Batubara said that education was part of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) program. “Improving education is part of an effort to enhance human resources in the future,” he said.
He hoped that the workshop and NIE would improve English mastery and reading habits among students in the face of this global challenge.
