he consumer price index (CPI) rose 2.37 percent year-on-year (yoy) in July, the steepest increase recorded since June last year, driven primarily by higher rice prices and education costs, according to Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data released on Friday.
The figure also represents an increase from the 1.87 percent growth recorded in June and 2.13 percent inflation posted in July 2024.
Pudji Ismartini, BPS deputy for distribution and services, said the food, beverages and tobacco category, which posted a 3.75 percent annual increase in prices, was the biggest contributor to headline inflation with 1.08 percentage points.
“Rice prices continued their upward trend and contributed 0.06 percentage points alone to monthly inflation,” she added, noting that rice contributed 0.15 percentage points to annual inflation.
A major staple food, rice has faced persistent price pressures in recent months due to seasonal supply constraints and production issues.
According to Arief Prasetyo Adi, head of the National Food Agency (Bapanas), unhulled rice production dropped to just 2.5 million tonnes in June-July, or half the March-April output, leading to a spike in the prices of both unprocessed and milled rice.
As a result, the volatile food commodity saw the steepest inflation in July at 3.82 percent, outpacing the increase in both core inflation (2.32 percent) and administered prices (1.32 percent).
