ndonesia’s eight-time national champion Satria Muda BritAma is preparing for its SEABA qualifier game on July 3 to 7 in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in order to get a slot at the higher FIBA Asia Champions Cup in Tokyo in September.

As winner of the 2012 National Basketball League (NBL), Satria Muda — popularly known as SM Britama — has earned a spot in the 2012 South East Asian Basketball Association’s (SEABA) qualifier for this year’s FIBA event, also known as Stankovic Cup.

In the Chiang Mai qualifier, Satria Muda will meet clubs from the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia.

If underdog Satria Muda wins at the SEABA’s Cup challenge, the team will receive an opportunity to face giant Asian clubs in Tokyo, Japan, from Sept. 14 to 22.

“The Philippines are definitely way above us. We played several tryout sessions in the Philippines recently against some university teams and clubs; we had some wins and some losses.

“As a country, we’ve never won against the Philippines [at several events over the past years],” assistant coach Hermanto told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

Despite the small winning chance, Hermanto said that his team would stick to its slogan: “Always win each match.”

To give an extra boost to the team, Satria Muda’s senior players Amin Prihantono and Ronny Gunawan will join the Chiang Mai bouts.

The two basketballers did not play for Satria Muda during the 2012 NBL season as they were supporting Indonesian Warriors, Satria Muda’s representation, in the ongoing 2012 ASEAN basketball league.

In the 2012 NBL season, Satria Muda retained its crown after outclassing Aspac Jakarta 59-42 in the final round at GOR Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta’s sports hall in Yogyakarta in April.

Satria Muda said that it considered 2012 as the toughest season following the absence of national players Amin and Ronny for the Warriors, as well as Youbel Sondakh with an injury. Amid the hard work of Cristiano Ronaldo Sitepu and his teammates, Satria Muda maintained its top position in the country.

Satria Muda has collected the most national league trophies since participating in the national league, which was named Kobatama, in 1999.

The league changed the name to Indonesia Basketball League and Satria Muda was victorious in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.

The league changed its name again to NBL in 2011, with Satria Muda still the unbeatable champion.
