nglish Premier League club Liverpool defeated Indonesia XI 2-0 in front of a jubilant Gelora Bung Karno stadium crowd on Saturday evening.
Brazilian Philippe Coutinho opened the scoring early with a goal at the 9th minute after breaking through the defense of four Indonesia players to kick the ball past the host team's goalkeeper, Kurnia Mega.
With very efficient performance and confidence, however, Indonesia XI managed to put up a good fight.
Titus Bonai almost scored a goal at the 15th minute but the Persipura player's kick shot wide.
Liverpool enjoyed most of the ball possession in the first half. Although the Reds had plenty of chances, the home side showed its skill and tenacity to maintain the score at 0-1.
In the second half, Liverpool continued its intense pressure, unleashing powerful efforts straight at Kurnia Mega, who brilliantly blocked the Reds' attempts to score.
As Indonesia XI continued to defend valiantly, it was just at the 88th minute when Oussama Assaidi passed the ball to Raheem Sterling, whose magnificent effort passed Kurnia Mega.
Around 75,000 spectators packed the stadium in the friendly match, which was part of the 2013 Liverpool pre-season tour of Asia and Australia.
The Reds' Steven Gerrard said he was delighted with the friendly game against Indonesia XI.
'I'm very pleased with the performance and the results,' said Gerrard in an interview after the match, which was aired live by SCTV.
He also praised the support of the Reds' fans in Indonesia, who sang You'll Never Walk Alone -- which is sang before home games by Liverpool fans ' during the match.
'I want to say a huge thank you for their wonderful support,' said Gerrard.
After Jakarta, the Liverpool squad, which is coached by Brendan Rodgers, will fly to Melbourne, Australia, for a match on July 24 and end its tour in Bangkok, Thailand, on July 28. (fan/ebf)
