National Commission of Human Rights (Komnas HAM) commissioner has said Youthand Sports Minister Roy Suryo should be held responsible for the Nabireboxing incident that claimed the lives of 18 people who were trampled todeath as they tried to exit a boxing arena.
'The Nabire incident has clearly shown the minister to not be serious in implementing standard operating procedures and that he has ignored sports infrastructure safety,' Komnas HAM head of human rights violations monitoring and investigation commission Natalius Pigai said without further elaboration on Tuesday, as quoted by kompas.com.
He said if the minister was truly concerned then he should have been aware that the Nabire Kota Lama sports stadium was no longer appropriate for big events like boxing, since there was only one way into and out of the stadium.
However,
he also acknowledged that evidence proving the riot was orchestrated did not
exist.
The
incident originated from a boxing match between Yulianus Pigome of Mawa
boxing club and Alpius Rumkorem of Persada.
The event went relatively smoothly, but when the winner was announced, several supporters refused to accept the result and became confrontational.
Other spectators panicked and tried to get out of the building. As many as 18 people died as a result of the melee, despite being rushed to nearby hospitals. (apt-dic)
