eavy rain and the consequent flooding would likely disrupt the elections of regional heads in Deli Serdang and Langkat regencies in North Sumatra, scheduled to take place on Wednesday.
One day before the elections, several polling stations across the two regencies were reportedly inundated.
The waters are yet to recede in Hinai, Tanjung Pura and Wampu in Langkat regency and Percut Sei Tuan and Tanjung Morawa in Deli Serdang regency.
Langkat General Elections Commission (KPUD) chief Margono Zumintoro said it was worried that the situation would disrupt elections in the regency tomorrow 'affecting people who want to cast their votes in polling stations.'
He was speaking on the sidelines of a meeting with local consultative forum (Muspida) members in Hinai district, one of the affected areas, on Tuesday.
Margono said KPUD Langkat had prepared alternative polling stations so that he was optimistic the elections would run smoothly. According to KPUD data, there were 1,768 polling stations and around 698,000 voters in Langkat.
Separately, KPUD Deli Serdang M.Yusri said the commission would set up polling stations in classrooms. According to data, Deli Serdang regency has 2,847 polling stations in 394 villages and sub-districts and 1,433,551 voters.
Eleven candidate pairs will run for the position of Deli Serdang regent and deputy regent.
Incumbent candidate Regent Ngongesa Sitepu with his running mate, Sulistianto, will run for Langkat's top post with three other candidate pairs. (ebf)
