barge smashed into one of the pilings of Nara Singa Bridge, also known as Bridge Two '€” one of the Batam-Rempang-Galang (Barelang) series of bridges '€” at 3 a.m. on Sunday.

The Batam Free Trade Zone Management Agency (BP FTZ) is still investigating the damage caused by the collision with the bridge.

The agency'€™s spokesman and One-Roof Integrated Services (PTSP) director, Dwi Djoko Wiwoho, told The Jakarta Post on Sunday that the agency'€™s security directorate at Bridge One had received reports from residents that the bridge had been hit by a barge, causing massive vibrations and a loud noise.

'€œOur officials have checked the bridge from overhead, while the barge left the scene after the collision,'€ Dwi said.

'€œOur officers could not secure the barge as they had no boats ready for launch at that time.'€

Dwi said the agency was still searching for the barge, adding that the collision had damaged the submersible underside of the bridge. '€œThe bridge is still passable but we have to check its structural condition,'€ he added.

Previously, Bridge Six was badly damaged after being hit by a foreign vessel, the Aussie 1, on June 6, 2012. The collision caused the bridge linking Galang and Galang Baru islands to shift by 1.2 meters.
