est Manggarai regency in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara(NTT), has implemented a new curriculum on environmental conservation forstudents at 27 elementary schools in the Mbeliling Forest area, in an effort toraise children'€™s awareness of environmental issues.

The new curriculum has been applied in schools located in five districts -- Komodo, Mbeliling, Sano Nggoang, Lembor and Lembor Selatan.

Apart from Mbeliling Forest, which is the largest forest in Flores, the famous Komodo Island is also a part of West Manggarai.

Education, Youth and Sports Agency head Magol Marthen said that the new subject was aimed at encouraging students to appreciate animals and the environment.

'€œWe have cooperated with the Burung Indonesia Institute [LBI] in establishing the curriculum. We are currently conducting a trial of this program [before fully implementing it],'€ Magol said.

'€œWe have teachers who have been trained by LBI members to deliver the lessons. The subject is also a reminder for parents on the importance of loving birds and other animals,'€ he added.

Meanwhile, LBI communication and awareness division staffer, Irfan Saputra, said that the curriculum was jointly established by teachers and officials of the Education, Youth and Sports Agency.
