T

he Sleman regency administration in Yogyakarta province is planning to build 11 retention basins for supporting water conservation in the locality.

'€œCurrently, we have 14 dams with an average capacity of up to 30,000 cubic meters,'€ head of the energy and mineral resources division at the Sleman Water, Energy and Mineral Resources (SDAEM) Agency, Fauzan Darmadi, said on Wednesday, as quoted by Antara news agency.

He said the 11 planned reservoirs would be built in Wedomartani in Ngemplak district, Lojajar in Tempel district, Sidokarto in Godean district and Pentingsari in Cangkringan district, among other locations.

Fauzan said that the project was estimated to cost between Rp 3 billion (US$265,100) and Rp 4 billion per reservoir. The water retention basins are now at the detailed engineering design (DED) stage, he added.

Sleman SDAEM Agency head Sapto Winarno admitted that, according to legal regulations, some land in Sleman was designated for conservation. He said that the agency had been unsure about the realization of the water reservoir project.

'€œCentral and northern Sleman are prioritized areas for water retention [basins],'€ said Sapto. However, other areas, such as western and eastern parts of Sleman, are also expected to become project areas. (meh)
