olkar chairman Aburizal Bakrie says he will not back down in running for president on the party's ticket saying that his presidential candidacy was mandated in its third national leaders meeting (Rapimnas).

'He is not backing down on his bid to run as a presidential candidate' Golkar Party central executive board chairman Firman Subagyo on the sidelines of the sixth Rapimnas Golkar at the Jakarta Convention Center in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Sunday, as quoted by kompas.com.

He said it was decided in the Rapimnas that Aburizal's mandate would be expanded. 'It will be assessed on whether he will still be Golkar presidential candidate, or presidential and vice presidential candidate as well,' said Firman.

The meeting's deputy steering committee chairman further said the expansion of the party mandate to Aburizal was due to developments in the national political dynamic. He also made sure that the party's coalition direction would be much clearer after the Rapimnas concluded.

Currently, Firman said, there were three options being considered by Golkar Party in facing the upcoming presidential election. The options were joining the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) to support Joko Widodo's presidential candidacy; joining the Gerindra Party to support Prabowo Subianto or creating a new coalition with the Democratic Party.

'The third Rapimnas mandated Aburizal as a presidential candidate; however; political dynamics have developed,' he asserted.

Earlier, Aburizal had reportedly made political communications with senior leaders of a number of parties, including the PDI-P, the Gerindra Party and the Democratic Party.

Speculation that former Army Chief of Staff Gen.(ret) Pramono Edhie Wibowo of the Democratic Party as Aburizal's running mate has risen ahead of the sixth Rapimnas.

Such speculation emerged as results of the meeting of Team 6, comprising Agung Laksono, MS Hidayat and Idrus Marham, which represented the Golkar Party and representatives from the Democratic Party, namely Jero Wacik, Syarief Hasan and Edhie 'Ibas' Baskoro Yudhoyono.

The Golkar Party and Democratic Party are reportedly to decide the direction of their coalition today. (fss/ebf)
