ozens of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people gathered in Surabaya, East Java, to declare their support for presidential candidate pair Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo and Jusuf Kalla, as they deemed that the Jokowi-Kalla ticket was more committed to fighting for their rights.

The group declared their support on the sidelines of a discussion held by the Surabaya Women's Alliance for Mental Revolution on Wednesday afternoon. Among the participants were Eva Kusuma Sundari, a member of the Jokowi-Kalla campaign team; Dede Oetomo, member of the Gaya Nusantara's Board of Advisory and former activist of the People's Democratic Party (PRD).

'We had met with Pak Jokowi and Pak Kalla directly, and our transgender friends in Jakarta had also met with Pak Jokowi as the city's governor. When he was a mayor of Surakarta, I heard that he often visited venues where LGBT people gathered,' Dede said as quoted by kompas.com on Wednesday.

Dede, who is also a lecturer at Airlangga University in Surabaya, said he hoped that LGBT people could get equal rights should the Jokowi-Kalla ticket win the election.

'I believe there will be recognition and equality for sexual minorities. I have seen that many supporters of the rival candidate have been involved with intolerant and discriminatory groups,' he said.

Meanwhile, Eva Kusuma Sundari said her team would approach LGBT people and other minority groups that have been discriminated against, including religious minorities like Shiites and Ahmadis.(gda/dic)
