KPMG assesses APRIL'€™s forest management

T

he Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SAC) of Asia PacificResources International Ltd. (APRIL), one of Indonesia'€™s largest pulp and paperproducers, has appointed KPMG Performance Registrar Inc. (KPMG PRI) to conductspecified auditing procedures to assess the implementation of its sustainableforest management policy (SFMP).

APRIL, which manages forest plantations to supply wood for its pulp and paper mills in Riau province, said on Friday that the SAC, created in January to oversee APRIL'€™s policy implementation, was due to issue a report of recommendations in November based on KPMG PRI'€™s findings.

KPMG PRI is a subsidiary of KPMG Canada, which is a part of the KPMG International network of professional firms that provide audit, tax and advisory services globally. KPMG Canada has provided forestry assurance services to the public and private sectors and currently maintains accredited subsidiaries that provide Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification.

Singapore-registered APRIL currently protects 250,000 hectares of High Conservation Value Forest. But SAC members noted that the conservation zones are spread throughout numerous forest concessions.

'€œFuture conservation plans should address the size, shape and geographic proximity of protected areas,'€ said SAC chairman Joe Lawson.
