RI to join world'€™s top-10 air-traffic markets by 2034

T

he International Air Transport Association (IATA) released its first 20-year passenger growth forecast on Thursday, projecting that global passenger numbers are expected to reach 7.3 billion by 2034.

In addition to that, IATA says that Indonesia will be the world'€™s fifth-largest domestic market by 2034.

'€œIndonesia'€™s domestic air-passenger market will grow at 6.4 percent, adding an extra 136 million passengers a year by 2034. The total domestic market will be 191 million,'€ IATA CEO Tony Tyler said in a statement to The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

Based on the association'€™s analysis of the 10 largest air-passenger markets defined by traffic to, from and within for the period of 2014 to 2034, he said that the country would enter the top 10 around 2020 and attain sixth place by 2029.

'€œBy 2034, Indonesia will be a market of 270 million passengers,'€ he said.

Among the highlights of the report is the expectation that China will overtake the US as the world'€™s largest passenger market defined by traffic to, from and within by 2030.

In 2034, flights to, from and within China will account for some 1.3 billion passengers, 856 million more than in 2014 with an average annual growth rate of 5.5 percent.

Meanwhile, the traffic to, from and within the US is expected to grow at an average annual growth rate of 3.2 percent to 1.2 billion passengers by 2034.

IATA represents some 240 airlines comprising 84 percent of global air traffic. The Global Passenger Forecast report was developed in partnership with Tourism Economics, a company of Oxford Economics, an independent economic forecasting organization. (++++)
