Indonesia aiming for food self-sufficiency in three years

P

resident Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo said that he was aiming for Indonesia to be self-sufficient in food production in three years, during his visit to Ngawi, East Java on Saturday.

'€œWe do not want to import rice any longer. If we were self-sufficient [in food production] there would be no more sugar or soy bean imports,'€ Jokowi said as quoted by Antara news agency.

During his visit, Jokowi presented local farmers with 852 hand tractors and 377 water pumps, and declared that the government aimed to distribute farming equipment to 500 regencies this year in order to boost production.

The government also aims to increase fertilizer and seed distribution to farmers by eliminating the auction system.

'€œThe auction system takes 45 days to two months. We will test out [a new system],'€ Jokowi added, saying that he vowed to supervise distribution efforts personally.

During his visit to East Java, Jokowi was accompanied by Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman, East Java Governor Soekarwo and Ngawi Regent Budi Sulistiono. (dyl/*****)
