A wild elephant ran amok in Tungkal Ulu district, West Tanjungjabung regency, Jambi, destroying paddy fields and oil palm plants.
"The elephant is believed to have fled from a breeding center at the Bukit Tigapuluh Nationa Park in Tebo regency," Tungkal Ulu district head M. Salim said on Tuesday.
The elephant entered the Tungkal Ulu district within the last two days after devastating plants and a hut belonging to villagers in Lubuk Bernai and Tembesu.
The animal has been under the close observation of the Jambi chapter of the Nature Conservation and Resources Agency (BKSD), which is now waiting for the deployment of trained elephants from the breeding center in Tebo.
"According to BKSD, trained elephants are needed to help capture the runaway animal," Salim said.
While waiting for the arrival of the trained elephants, local residents have been warned to be on alert in their daily activities. "What we've done is drive the animal away from residential areas, so as not to disrupt the residents' activities," he said. (hhr)
