he capital's notorious traffic jams are believed to cause some Rp 65 trillion (US$5 billion) in losses each year.
'Data shows that losses resulting from congestion in Jakarta reaches up to Rp 65 trillion per year,' head of the research and development division at the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry, Arie Setiadi Moerwanto, said in a statement on Friday as quoted by Antara news agency.
He said the losses excluded non-economic impacts such as the psychological effects created for road users and decreasing productivity.
He said the responsibility for tacking congestion ' caused by poor roads, an excess numbers of vehicles, poor public transportation, flooding and traffic accidents ' should be the responsibility of multiple parties.
One problem, Arie said, was that every institution had different data on roads and traffic, and that it was important to integrate the data into a single database.
'This is important to solve the problem efficiently and effectively,' he said.
