The winner of Asia's Next Top Model season three, Indonesia's Ayu Gani, believes that survivors of bullying usually become successful in life.
Gani, 23, said that she endured bullying during her junior high school in Surakarta, Central Java.
"I was a new girl from Jakarta. Some of my male seniors wanted to get to know me and it enraged the girls. They threw bottles and trash at me, calling me trash," Gani said during a roundtable interview in South Jakarta on Monday.
She expressed her puzzlement as she thought she did not pay attention to her appearance as much back then.
"I was ugly. I had dark skin and very skinny. I never put any makeup. So I didn't think they would be jealous," she said.
The teachers also refused to help her.
However, Gani saw a positive side of her experience. "I think people who used to be bullied usually become successful," she said.
She also said that with her achievement now, she saw some of her old friends following her account in the photo-sharing social media Instagram.
Gani secured the crown for the Fox International Channel's hit show after defeating two other finalists Marlene Monika Sta Maria from the Philippines and Aimee Rose Cheng-Bradshaw from Singapore in the final round, which was aired on Star World last Wednesday.
The judges favored Gani for her performance in the last two tests, which challenged all contestants in a photo shoot and runway walk wearing haute couture dresses. (fsu) (++++)
