AYAPURA: A communal clash that broke out in Panaga district, Tolikara regency, Papua, at around 5 a.m. local time on Wednesday has caused 100 traditional Honai homes, two community health centers (Puskesmas), and an office building to be razed by fire.

Tolikara Police chief Suroso said that the arson attack was sparked by an adultery case. '€œThe adultery case happened a long time ago, but residents still hold grudges, and those grudges led to the communal clash,'€ he said.

Last week, a fire broke out in Yelok village, believed to be razed by residents from Panaga village. Yelok villagers were believed to have reciprocated by razing homes in Panaga.

'€œThe village was vacant when the fire took place as the villagers were in Karubaga to attend an event,'€ Suroso said.

A honai is a hut made of sticks and thatch. Tolikara Regent Usman Wanimbo reportedly flew to Panaga shortly after the incident to communicate with residents so that they would not take the law into their hands but hand over the legal process to authorities.
