Depok city administration plans to build a two-level overpass at an estimated cost of Rp 1 trillion as a key step toward managing traffic congestion, an official said on Friday.
Hardiono, head of the Depok Development Planning Board (Bappeda), said that the overpass would connect Depok main roads Margonda, Dewi Sartika and Siliwangi.
"Hopefully we can complete the detailed engineering design (DED) this year," he said as quoted by state news agency Antara.
The roughly Rp 1 trillion project is set to be funded by the central government.
"We will propose the budget to the central government after we complete the DED. We really hope the government approves it as this is in the public's interest," he said.
The Depok administration built an overpass for Jl. Arif Rahman in 2006, leaving Jl. Dewi Sartika and Jl. Raya Citayam as the only two main roads in the city with level crossings. The current project is an overpass for Jalan Dewi Sartika.
He claimed that the new roads would decrease congestion at the Margonda-Siliwangi-Kartini intersection and stop vehicles having to queue at the railway crossing.
The project is also expected to decrease the number of traffic jams at Sengon, Raya Sawangan and Tanah Baru crossings. (rin)
