The main shopping strip in Yogyakarta, Jl. Malioboro, is set to be closed to public vehicles from Dec. 31 to provide more comfortable and secure conditions for tourists as well as local residents while welcoming the New Year.
From Thursday morning, the eastern side of Jl. Malioboro will reportedly be dedicated to pedestrians.
According to Jl. Malioboro's technical management unit head Syarif Teguh, tens of thousands of tourist vehicles were moving around the city.
'Malioboro is their main destination. If we don't make the necessary arrangements, there will be terrible congestion,' Syarif told thejakartapost.com on Wednesday.
He added that parking spaces had been readied in the Abu Bakar Ali parking lot and other locations around Jl. Malioboro as the area would host fireworks and onstage entertainment including wayang kulit (leather shadow puppet) performances.
Other popular destinations in Yogyakarta such as Parangtritis beach and Kaliurang are set to feature campursari (traditional songs performed in a modern style) and wayang kulit shows to entertain visitors. Meanwhile, guests of the Hotel Tentrem Yogyakarta and Royal Ambarrukmo Hotel can opt to enjoy entertainment from performers such as Ebiet G. Ade, Rossa and Tompi. (kes)
