ROBOLINGGO: The status of Mount Bromo in Probolinggo regency, East Java, was lowered from Level III (alert) to Level II (cautious) on Friday, a good signal for the tourism industry.
The Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center (PVMBG) western region volcano monitoring division head Hendra Gunawan said the downgrade was decided as Mt. Bromo's volcanic activity had decreased in the past five days.
Hendra said that in addition to the new status for the 2,329 meter volcano, the safety zone was also decreased from a radius of 3-kilometers to 1-kilometer from the summit.
Hopeful that such a downgrade may attract more tourists arrivals to the area, the chairman of the Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Association Digdoyo Djamaludin Putra has welcomed the new status. Tourism decreased around Mt. Bromo due to the alert level status of the volcano.
