orkers have taken several days to lift the large quantity of cable jacket material that was recently discovered to have blocked the waterway near the State Palace. Believing it to be an act of sabotage to the city’s effort to mitigate flooding, the city administration have reported the incident to police.
The workers said on Thursday that since the discovery they had lifted 17 truck loads of cable jacket material from the waterway. "Maybe there are people who don't like me, I don't know," Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama said.
Certain parties may intentionally dump the cable jacket material into the waterway in the hope that they might earn money from the administration through removal, he also speculated.
The administration discovered and removed a quantity of cable jacket material on Jl. Medan Merdeka Selatan in 2014. The City Water Management Agency made the most recent discovery in late February.
"Who would want to throw away such quantities of cable jacket material if it can be sold? This must be intentional," Ahok said on Wednesday.
Ahok confirmed that he had reported the case to the city police.
Following this incident, he added, the city administration would install more CCTV cameras to monitor major parts of the city. He criticized the Jakarta Communication and Information Agency for failing to install CCTV in vital areas near the State Palace.
With CCTV, such activities could be monitored, he added.
"I want CCTV to be installed and they have to record three days [per week] minimum. We should save [the video footage] on hard disk. I want all major roads to be monitored by CCTV," Ahok said. (bbn)
