ttorney General HM Prasetyo has announced that former Bank Modern president commissioner Samadikun Hartono, who fled Indonesia in 2003 to avoid four years’ imprisonment, will land at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in East Jakarta before midnight on Thursday.

Prasetyo made the announcement when Bambang Soesatyo, chairman of the House of Representatives Commission III overseeing legal affairs, asked him at a work meeting on Thursday whether he had successfully brought home the graft suspect.

“I would appreciate your latest update regarding Bank Indonesia liquidity support [BLBI] cases. From what I’ve heard, [you] have will have successfully brought home fugitive Samadikun before midnight tonight. Is that true, Pak?” Bambang asked.

“Yes, that’s correct. It’s tonight,” Prasetyo replied.

Samadikun was arrested in China earlier this month after 13 years on the run from a four-year prison sentence for embezzlement. Samadikun was proven guilty of misusing BLBI funds given to Bank Modern. The BLBI scheme triggered Rp 169 billion (US$12.8 million) worth of state losses.

Samadikun's Bank Modern went bankrupt during the 1997 monetary crisis. The funds were part of Rp 145.5 trillion in loans disbursed by BI in 1998 to help 48 troubled banks during the crisis. Ninety-five percent of the loans were embezzled.

According to the AGO's website, Samadikun lived in a luxury apartment in Singapore and still owned film studios in Vietnam and China while he was on the run.

It was close cooperation between Indonesian and Chinese authorities that led to the arrest of Samadikun. (ebf)
