The Golkar Party announced on Monday the members of its new central executive board (DPP) as selected by a special committee.

Setya Novanto, the party chairman elected in an extraordinary national congress (Munaslub) earlier in May, said the process to select some of the 247 party members who would become the DPP members ran well and smoothly.

“Although the atmosphere surrounding the discussion was tough, dynamic and sometimes tense because what we talked about would determine the party’s destiny for the next three years, the selection process was nicely done,” said Setya during a press conference at the Golkar headquarters in Slipi, West Jakarta, on Monday.

Three former candidates for chairman got roles on the board. They are Airlangga Hartarto as the economy chief coordinator, Indra Bambang Utoyo as the defense and security chief coordinator and Azis Syamsuddin as the regional autonomy chief coordinator.

Following the Golkar Munaslub in Nusa Dua, Bali, from May 15 to 17, a committee was assigned to set up a new central executive board within 15 days.

The committee consisted of nine Golkar members who represented the party’s regional executive boards (DPD) and wing organizations.

Setya led the committee, along with Golkar’s executive chief Nurdin Halid, as the representative of the DPD Golkar for the western region (Sumatra), and Sudikerta, as the representatives of the DPD Golkar for the central region (Bali).

The committee applied seven principles as a basis to select the new board members: the party’s reconciliation commitment, its modernization spirit, its vision to set up a welfare state by 2045, nation-wide representation, leadership regeneration, female representation and the principle of having the right person in the right place.

The newly installed central executive board will consolidate its organization on both national and regional levels within the next 100 days.

Although the new board has in fact been announced, legally the DPP Golkar has not yet been finalized because it still needs an approval from the upcoming national leaders meeting (Rapimnas).

Golkar secretary-general Idrus Marham said the party was set to discuss the new board members during its plenary meeting scheduled for Wednesday. They would later determine the final list during the Rapimnas, he said.

"There are two suggestions for the organizing of the Rapimnas. Several members want the Rapimnas to be held after the Idul Fitri celebration, while some others proposed for it to be held during the fasting month of Ramadhan so we could break the fast together," Idrus said. (ebf)
