olkar Party chairman Setya Novanto has said that 30 percent of positions in the party’s newly formed central executive board (DPP) have been filled by female members.

“As mandated by the 2011 Political Parties Law, the representation of women in a political party must be at least 30 percent,” Setya said during the announcement of the Golkar DPP members for the period of 2016-2019 at the party’s headquarters in Slipi, West Jakarta, on Monday.

He said Golkar had many female senior members with high potential, so the committee assigned to form the party’s new leadership had to be selective in deciding who would be given positions.

“It [female representation] was assessed thoroughly. Alhamdulillah [thank God], Golkar has a lot of female senior members,” Setya said as quoted by kompas.com.

Earlier, Golkar politician Nurul Arifin said the party would achieve 30 percent female representation as mandated by the Political Parties Law in the 2016-2019 leadership.

“As many as 32.7 percent of the Golkar DPP members will be women,” Nurul said as quoted by kompas.com.

As reported earlier, the number of members in the Golkar DPP for 2016-2019 is more than 200. The decision to create such a “fat” party structure was based on a spirit of reconciliation, in which Golkar must accommodate input from all parties, said Nurul.

She said Golkar’s commitment to reconciling conflicting camps within the party had led to the large leadership structure elected for the current period.

“It exceeds what was mandated in the Golkar Party’s extraordinary national congress [Munaslub]. Initially, we wanted to elect 117 people but it was impossible because we must be reconciliatory, so we must accommodate all parties,” said Nurul.

Nurul said the board represented two camps — led by Aburizal Bakrie and Agung Laksono — that were once in dispute, as well as candidates participating in the chairmanship race who went against each other during the Munaslub.

Nurul said the preparations of the Golkar DPP were fully in line with all mechanisms required by the Political Parties Law as well as budgetary concerns of the party. (ebf)
