T

here is a sense of déjà vu after the nation's top-ranked men's singles player Tommy Sugiarto was dumbfounded by unseeded Hong Kong shuttler Wei Nan in two straight games 21-16, 21-14 at the BCA Indonesia Open Super Series Premier 2016 badminton championships.

Previously, at the 2015 Total BWF World Championship, Wei embarrassed the son of the 1983 world champion Icuk Sugiarto in a rubber 26-24, 8-21, 22-20 match.

However this time, the defeat was more unbearable because the home spectators packing the Bung Karno Indoor Stadium had such high hopes of Tommy, who has a ticket to compete in the upcoming Olympic Games.

With a disappointed look, Tommy admitted his weak performance.

“I made many unforced errors several times. I could not develop my pattern well which resulted in two or three of my shots ending in ‘checkmate’,” Tommy said after the match.

He attributed his weak performance to the lack of training.

The schedule for the tournaments was quite tight, especially given he had just competed in the Thomas Cup badminton tournament last month.

The lack of training has impacted his performance, he claimed.

The player, who has left the national training camp, also said that he was sorry to disappoint his sponsors over this loss.

Tommy added that he aimed to give his best performance in the upcoming Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Therefore, he will later decide to join the Australian Open or concentrate solely on the Olympics.

“I’m focusing myself on the Olympics Games. My peak performance is for the Olympics,” Tommy said. (dmr)
