T Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta) has said it will install 120 barriers to prevent private vehicles from entering bus lanes as the city administration starts to “sterilize” the lanes.
“We will develop more barriers. Some 120 barriers are under construction,” said PT Transjakarta CEO Budi Kaliwono as reported by beritajakarta.com on Monday.
On Monday, the city administration started to clear Transjakarta lanes of private vehicles, a policy to provide the city with emergency evacuation routes and to discourage people from driving their own private vehicles.
Initially, the policy will be imposed on all 12 bus lanes across the city.
Budi said the development of barriers was needed because of the limited number of field officers guarding the lanes from intruders.
He said his company only had 375 officers to keep vehicles away from Transjakarta lanes. Since Monday, some 500 field officers have been deployed. The additional personnel came from the Jakarta Public Order Agency and the Jakarta Police.
Due to the personnel shortages, the city administration cannot enforce its ban on private vehicles entering into Transjakarta lanes. In many areas motorists still enter the lanes to avoid traffic congestion. (bbn)
