he National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) has increased personnel and sent out a drone to search for Swiss national Lionel Du Creaux, 26, who went missing while trekking at Mount Semeru in East Java last week.
Basarnas assigned a drone operator to Ranu Pani, one of the 10 posts on Mt. Semeru on Tuesday, the head of Surabaya's Basarnas office, M. Arifin, said on Tuesday, as reported by news agency Antara.
The aerial search complements the land search involving 80 personnel, up from an initial 20 personnel.
Du Creaux went missing while mountain climbing with his friend, French national Alice Guignard, last week. The two parted ways at the fourth post of Mt. Semeru, as Guignard decided to descend due to exhaustion, while Du Creaux went on to the next level.
Arifin said the team was sweeping the locations believed to have been passed by Du Creaux along trekking routes in Ranu Pani and Tawon Songo.
Du Creaux and Guignard arrived at Mt. Semeru on June 3 from Malang, East Java, and went directly to the trekking route without reporting to Mt. Semeru officials. Guignard was found by other trekkers on June 6 after getting lost herself for two days in the mountains.
Rising 3,676 meters above sea level, Mt. Semeru is a favorite mountain climbing spot for both domestic and foreign tourists. (rin)
