overnor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama has said the Jakarta city administration will purchase at least 100 Mercedes Benz buses to improve the services of the city-owned public transportation managed by PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta).

“It is good. We will purchase 100 buses,” said Ahok when checking a Mercedes Benz bus at City Hall on Wednesday as reported by beritajakarta.com.

Ahok invited the German automobile maker to join other companies, like Scania and MAN, that could produce high-quality buses to supply vehicles to be deployed along the 12 Transjakarta busway corridors. He said he also invited Hino to offer buses to Transjakarta.

On Wednesday, Mercedes Benz demonstrated a bus with forward-facing seats as Ahok had demanded. There was a Tranjakarta logo on the blue bus.

The city administration has allocated Rp 3.2 trillion (US$ 239.16 million) from the city budget to Transjakarta, said the governor.

Ahok told Mercedes Benz to produce as many buses as possible because his administration needs a lot of them to replace the old ones. He also told the company to provide each bus with a tapping device for paying bus fares.

During the meeting with Mercedes' management, Ahok demanded 20 to 30 percent discounts for each bus that would be allocated for maintenance. “We will also sign a contract with them to carry out maintenance of their buses. Therefore, I demanded 20 to 30 percent in discounts,” he said. (bbn)
