House to question Tito on terrorism during fit and proper test

he House of Representatives will explore security issues, in particular terrorism eradication, in the fit and proper test of the National Police chief candidate, Comr. Gen. Tito Karnavian.
The House’s intention to focus on terrorism eradication was shared by the United Development Party (PPP) faction. PPP lawmaker Arsul Sani said his faction would highlight law enforcement measures in eradicating terrorism during Tito’s fit and proper test. It would also question the police chief candidate on his vision and mission for bureaucratic reforms within the National Police, he said.
"What is the solution to catch fugitives abroad? We will dig more into his vision and mission to develop cooperation with Interpol and foreign police institutions," Arsul said at the House complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Monday.
The House’s Commission III overseeing legal affairs, human rights and security is scheduled to hold Tito’s fit and proper test on Thursday.
Commission III chairman Bambang Soesatyo said the House would also question the current National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) chief about the harmonization of the National Police with other law enforcement institutions.
"We will also learn more about how Tito views the police’s internal challenges, for which he is expected to create harmony inside the National Police," said the Golkar Party lawmaker on Monday.
Separately, Nasir Djamil of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) said his faction would confirm four main issues with Tito in the fit and proper test. The PKS would question Tito on Indonesia’s law enforcement measures, the National Police's internal reforms, the police’s role in public services and how they could maintain tolerance in Indonesia, he said.
The fit and proper test scheduled on Thursday is part of the screening test for Tito, the sole candidate for the National Police chief position. Commission III aims to finish the series of screening tests this month and bring the results to the House's plenary meeting next Tuesday.
Current National Police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti is to retire this July when he turns 58 years old as Article 30 ( 2 ) of the 2002 National Police Law stipulates that is the maximum age for National Police officers. (ebf)
