ouse of Representatives Commission IX overseeing health and manpower affairs wants to hear a full explanation from Health Minister Nila Moeloek regarding the recent case of fake vaccines for toddlers in several areas of the country.

The commission will hold a hearing with Minister Nila on Monday afternoon in which lawmakers will question her over the fake vaccines amid rising public concerns, lawmaker Okky Asokawati from the United Development Party (PPP) said on Monday.

"I truly regret that the Ministry only reacted after the police started their investigation. The [ministry’s] lack of preventive measures is very alarming," she told journalists at the House complex.

Separately, Ribka Tjiptaning from the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) faction also blamed the government for the lack of surveillance over drug distribution. She said the Health Ministry and Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) should take full responsibility for the case as the distribution of drugs is under the purview of the two offices.

The National Police's Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim)  uncovered a counterfeit vaccine syndicate in several areas of Bekasi and South Tangerang last week, where they arrested 13 suspects allegedly producing and distributing the fake vaccines. (rin)
