A

round 150,000 Muslims are expected to attend Idul Fitri prayers on Wednesday at the country’s biggest mosque, Istiqlal Mosque, in Central Jakarta.

The government decided on Monday that the start of Syawal 1, which marks the first day of Idul Fitri, would fall on July 6 to 7.

“Vice President Jusuf Kalla and his wife, Mufidah Jusuf Kalla, have confirmed that they will attend Idul Fitri prayers at the mosque. Education and Culture Minister Anies Baswedan will also be here with his family,” Abu Hurairah Abdul Salam, Istiqlal Mosque’s head of protocol, told the Jakarta Post on Tuesday.

Istiqlal Mosque imam Ahmad Husni Ismail is set to lead the Idul Fitri prayer, while the mosque’s grand imam, Nasaruddin Umar, will deliver a sermon themed “Membangun Generasi Qur’ani” (Building Generations that Adhere to Al Quran), he added.

Abu said all those who wanted to pray at Istiqlal must help to maintain the cleanliness of the mosque, such as by removing newspapers used as makeshift prayer mats. Abu said cleaning staff were typically overwhelmed by the volume of garbage left behind by visitors after Idul Fitri prayers. (wnd/ebf)
