It took dozens of orange-clad city cleaners about two hours to completely clean up the papers spreading across the field, the adjacent parking lot and terrace.
"We had warned the congregation not to leave newspapers on the field. However, it's like an annual habit that they are unwilling to clean up the field," said M. Zainul Arifin, a member of the mosque’s committee.
Zainul added that the committee had cooperated with the administration of Selong subdistrict and the South Jakarta Sanitation Agency to clear up the field after the prayers.
Some 25,000 Muslims had attended the prayers at the Al-Azhar Mosque. "We know the congregation’s habits at this mosque, so we have prepared for proper cleaning up," Zainul said. (iik)
