ike many Indonesian Muslims, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo made a visit to his hometown to celebrate Idul Fitri.

On Thursday, the President met members of his extended family in Kragan village in Karanganyar, Central Java, where he spent his childhood.

Jokowi went with his mother, Sujiatmi Notomiharjo, but was not accompanied by First Lady Iriana Jokowi.

Karangnyar is 14 kilometers east of Surakarta where a suicide bombing took place a day before Idul Fitri and where Jokowi was a mayor for seven years. The police have beefed up security in the city to safeguard the President.

Kragan village is where Jokowi’s grandfather, Wiryo Miharjo, resided. Jokowi lived with his grandfather before moving out when he was a teenager.

Jokowi, known for his common touch and down-to-Earth persona, also met with his childhood friends. (ary)
