BookWORM; Raline Shah: Reading for Perspective

(JP/Cemara Dinda)

Despite her busy schedule, Raline Shah reads to keep herself informed as an actress and grounded as a person. Turning the pages, she believes, is a necessary exercise to make her a better actor.

“Acting is not just about being a celebrity, getting into movies and looking nice. It’s a lifetime process. Everyone you meet, every experience and every struggle can prepare us to become better. Some books even say that we have to hold onto that [process], so we’re on our toes and not so comfortable all the time,” she said.

Amid her passion for acting, Raline loves to give back to the community. For the past seven years, she has been active in supporting and contributing to the Foundation for the Rehabilitation of Disabled Children (YPAC), an organization founded by her mother.

A World Without Islam
by Graham E. Fuller

I think that people need to see Islam not just based on what is happening, the whole politicization of it. So this book really helps people see Islam in a bigger perspective.

Body Voice Imagination
by David Zinder

Body Voice Imagination: A Training for the Actor is a book on training, physically and spiritually. I’m doing a refresher course in Yogyakarta, and from this book I can see what methods they are using, because anyone can get into acting. It’s more of a discipline, a skill anyone can master, really. This is what the book proposes, and it’s also what I believe. Well, at times luck, talent and the market can determine how famous you will be, which defines a celebrity, but as an actor, it’s more of an art, and that’s an area we can always improve on theoretically and practically.

All in all, being an actor is like being a musical instrument. We need to be tuned to be able to make people feel something with our acting, because what’s written in the script is usually only 5 or 10 percent of the communication. With imagination, it’s an aspect everyone could benefit from. And from the perspective of an actor, delivering words — basically conjuring up emotions from things that have never happened to you before — your role relies a lot on imagination.

The Little Prince
by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

I have read this book four or five times and I still cry! From this book I learned so much about adults, what it means to be one. I think this is one of the smartest books that anyone could read, because it’s really important to look at the world in a simple way. The book really does the job well of delivering that message in such a touching way.
