"We still have much work to do after this public expose. We will approve the regulations after consulting with the House of Representatives," acting KPU chief Hadar Nafis Gumay said in a speech during the public expose in Jakarta on Monday.
The elections body discussed four of the 10 regulations during Monday’s public expose, attended by, among others, members of election watchdog organizations.
The four regulations being discussed are KPU Regulation No. 4/2015 on voter data update, KPU Regulation No. 7/2015 on campaigns, KPU Regulation No. 8/2015 on campaign budgets and KPU Regulation No. 9/2015 on candidacy.
The revision of the KPU regulations is a legal consequence, following the amendment of Law No. 8/2015 on regional elections by the House of Representatives in June.
"We still have to finish six KPU Regulations. The new law requires the KPK to consult with the government and the House before the KPU produces any regulations," KPU commissioner Arief Budiman said.
The 2016 Regional Elections Law states that the KPU must consult with the House before issuing regulations. Article 9, Paragraph A of the law says the commission must consult with the House in arranging technical regulations for the elections; the results of the hearing are legally binding.
The process of preparing the 2017 simultaneous regional elections will start later in August, when the KPU opens registration for independent candidate from August 3 to 10.
A total of 76 regencies, 18 cities and seven provinces will elect regents, mayors and governors, respectively. (bbn)
