onsultants of intellectual property rights will be able to submit applications for patents, brand rights and design rights on behalf of their clients online in the next three months, a ministry official said.

“The public will also be able to register on their own six months after the launch of the system,” Yasmon, the Law and Human Rights Ministry’s director for information technology for intellectual property, said in Jakarta on Monday.

The applicants only need to send a letter or an email to the ministry’s Intellectual Property Directorate General, enclose a statement on the ownership rights of the product and a copy of their ID to get a username and password to register online, he added.

“Usually, it takes up to three years to obtain a patent, and up to nine months to get brand rights. Through the online system, we expect the [administrative] process to be faster,” Ahmad M. Ramli, the ministry’s Intellectual Property Directorate General head, said.

Currently, patent application costs range from Rp 350,000 (US$26) to Rp 2 million. Meanwhile, the application fees for brand rights range from Rp 1 million to Rp 2 million. Meanwhile, the costs for design rights application are Rp 300,000 for small business and Rp 800,000 for medium and big business.

Ramli said applicants would be charged a lower fee if they registered online through dgip.go.id. The ministry set up an online system last year but it was limited to copyright applications. (wnd)
