est Java Police on Thursday arrested four Cirebon councilors they claim they caught gambling in a hotel room during a leadership training session in Bandung.

There were six people in the hotel room, four of whom were gambling while the other two were eating, West Java Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Yusri Yunus said, adding that the police had confiscated the playing cards and Rp 5 million (US$381) from the suspects.

The councilors were supposed to be attending a regional meeting aimed at improving the leadership capacity of members of the Cirebon legislative council, Yusri said.

The four suspects were charged with Article 303 of the Criminal Code on gambling, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment.

While it remains widespread across the country, gambling is illegal in Indonesia. (ary)
