he Central Java Police have assigned 1,500 police personnel to guard Nusakambangan prison island in Cilacap, Central Java, in the lead-up to the third round of executions of drug convicts.
The police come from several police precincts from Cilacap and neighboring regencies and will be backed up by the Central Java Police's Mobile Brigade personnel, Cilacap Police spokesman Adj. Comr. Bintoro said on Tuesday. Security started being beefed up on Monday, when ferry crossings to the prison island from Wijaya Pura Dock were restricted.
"The police personnel will be divided into several security rings. Near the entrance will be a restricted area for everyone, including journalists, so we need your cooperation on this," Bintoro told journalists on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, families of death row convicts, their lawyers and prosecutors gathered at the Cilacap Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday for a meeting to discuss convict dossier examination.
Attorney General M. Prasetyo previously announced that a third round of executions involving several drug convicts would be conducted after Idul Fitri. No details have been released on when it would take place or the number of inmates to face executioners. The first round of executions during Joko “Jokowi” Widodo presidency 's took place in January last year with six inmates executed, followed by the execution of eight drug convicts in April. (rin)
